Founded by the renowned sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur, the Ellen MacArthur Trust delivers support for young individuals on their journey to recovery from cancer and leukaemia. Through sailing adventures across The Solent and beyond, the trust works as a catalyst for personal growth and exploration across one of the best sailing spots in the UK.
Over the past 18 years, we have witnessed the profoundly positive impact that these sailing trips have had on young people’s lives – not only through the joy of being on the water, but also by integrating into supportive communities.
The aim is to help every young person rediscover their potential and feel connected rather than isolated in their journey. In 2022 alone, Ellen MacArthur Trust organised a total of fourteen four-day trips, welcoming a total of 266 young sailors on their first nautical adventure.
The Ellen MacArthur Trust team introduce young sailors to the fundamentals of sailing. They spend their days going from port to port, tacking and jibing their way across The Solent. Whilst under sail they partake in water fights and games. Once ashore, EMC host a team barbecue in Lymington and a traditional fish and chip dinner in Cowes/Yarmouth. During their trip, Solent Rib Charter surprise the group by turning up with four Ribs to embark on a Rib blast around the Solent’s hot spots such as the Needles, Hurst Castle, and Newtown. We have received great feedback in the past as the majority have not hit the water at such high speeds before!
Our partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Trust spans back to their inception in 2003 – we are delighted to continue this partnership in providing rib rides to these aspiring sailors throughout the summer. The Trust has impacted a total of 2,836 young people to date. We look forward to supporting them on such a mission.
